Optimist International has announced details for the 2026-2027 Optimist International Oratorical Contest, continuing one of the organization’s longest-standing traditions of encouraging young people to develop confidence, communication skills, and leadership through public speaking.
This year’s contest topic is:
“How My Actions Strengthen Those Around Me”
The Optimist International Oratorical Contest began in 1928 and has grown to become the organization’s longest-running program. Each year, young people are challenged to prepare and deliver a speech on a pre-assigned topic, giving them valuable experience speaking before an audience while encouraging them to think thoughtfully about issues that affect themselves and those around them.
In addition to the experience gained through participation, contestants have the opportunity to compete for college scholarships as they advance through the various levels of competition.
District Scholarship Awards
At the District level, scholarships are awarded to the top three contestants:
- First Place – $2,500
- Second Place – $1,500
- Third Place – $1,000
Contestants who continue advancing may have the opportunity to compete at the Optimist International World Championships level, where participants can compete for scholarships totaling up to $22,500.
